What Does “spdif Out” On The Back Of My Lcd Tv Mean?

on the back of my lcd philips tv, theres a single hole where it says spdif out on it. What does that mean and what can i do with it? And does it only work with the different auxillary modes or can i use it with regular cable?

It is a digital audio output signal that you could use, if you wanted, to feed into your AV receiver so that you could enjoy the dolby digital sound part of high def.

I’m not sure of what you mean here. It will only give you dolby digital is the signal the TV is getting includes dolby digital. If you have standard def cable, it will not give you dolby digital. But if yoiu have high def cable or even an antenna that is getting a high def signal, you can get surround sound. (which is a REALLY big improvement over plain old stereo)
